Kling Klang Riddim July 2012 Dre Skull/Mixpak

Mixpak Records Presents The “Kling Klang Riddim” Produced By Dre Skull. Features Voicings From Beenie Man, Popcaan, Deva Bratt, Suku And Tifa.

Part of a trilogy of Dre Skull releases in Summer 2012 (with Loudspeaker Riddim preceding and Kingston Story: Deluxe Edition to follow), the Kling Klang Riddim presents five new dancehall tracks, two new additions to the Mixpak artist family and a million vibes.

Though recorded in Kingston, Jamaica earlier this year, Kling Klang is named after Kraftwerk’s legendary German studio and takes some inspiration from their repertoire: Dre Skull’s riddim revs up to the sound of an engine, then breaks into a minimal soundscape powered by cymbals, resonating bass and lasers that waver on computer game aesthetics before accelerating into the chorus.

For his second voicing on a Mixpak riddim, Beenie Man takes a trip in his time machine and delivers “Super Model,” offering a 90s style delivery with throwback content to match: hailing the coca cola bottle shape. Portmore’s Deva Bratt brings it “Hot And Ready,” with his fast-flowing auto-tuned falsetto that impressively barely breaks for a breath. With “So We Do It,” Popcaan yet again picks another style from his wide array, going in for a relaxed storytelling verse that would make Slick Rick proud and a singjay chorus-line to remind you how he do it. Ward 21 deejay and producer Suku brings the deep vibrations of a bass voice on “Mad Sumaddy,” a sonic and lyrical warning against his powerful tunes that drop like bombs. On the same tip, Tifa brings her boasy style as a “Champion Bubbler,” laying claim to more winds than a country road and a repertoire of dances ranging from the 6.30 to Tick It Like A Clock.

This is Mixpak’s trans-continental express; always adding artists to the journey and keeping the strange ride rolling smoothly. Jump on it.

Khulroy: My Time Now Album 2012

The Return of the Rankin Cutty In Full Blast

Phillip Thomas was born in Clarendon Parish, Jamaica in 1965 on the 12th of February. He began his career as a reggae artist at the age of eleven with local sound systems, going on to work with the Gemini sound system, before moving on to work with Tony Rebel's Rebel Tone and Papa Roots, and later working with Stereo Mars, Arrows and Metro Media. He joined Killamanjaro where he worked alongside Early B, Super Cat, Puddy Roots, and Little Twitch, and then Sturmars where he worked with Josey Wales, Nicodemus, Super Cat, U Brown and Yami Bolo. His first job on leaving school was as a butcher.

During the 80s, Ranks moved on to the Arrows sound system and his debut single "Gunman Lyrics" was recorded for Winston Riley's Techniques label. He also recorded such tracks as "Out Of Hand" and "Fishman Lyrics" with Riley and after spending some time in Miami working with Super Cat and Nicodemus, he worked with Patrick Roberts' Shocking Vibes label, releasing the single "The Bomber". In 1990 he joined Donovan Germain's Penthouse label, enjoying a hit with "Pon Mi Nozzle".

Ranks came to the attention of London-based Fashion Records and in 1991, he released "The Stopper" and a debut album of the same name for Fashion, following this up with the album Lethal Weapon in the same year for Penthouse, featuring singers such as Marcia Griffiths, Dennis Brown, Wayne Wonder and Beres Hammond. His follow-up albums From Mi Heart and Six Million Ways to Die were released on Priority Records in 1996. Six Million Ways to Die included a hip hop remix of Ranks' song "A Who Seh Me Dun" which was voiced earlier over the Bam Bam riddim in 1992. In 2000, he released the album Back With A Vengeance produced by King Jammy. This album saw Ranks venture into other musical styles, including hip hop and dancehall. His song "Bomber" is considered a classic in Jamaica.

Cutty Ranks has been influential outside the world of dancehall, particularly in the field of drum 'n' bass and jungle. His vocals have been frequently sampled and his songs remixed by artists such as Goldie. The DJ SS remix of "Limb By Limb" appeared on Channel 4 sitcom Father Ted in 1996, being blasted at volume by Father Fintan Stack, a belligerent and disagreeable priest that is drafted in to replace a then-retired Father Jack. A further notable jungle track using Rank's vocal is 'War in 94' produced by Badman (aka Marvellous Cain) on IQ records, released in 1994.

He now releases music on his own Philip Music label. He has rejected the 'slackness' of modern dancehall in favour of more 'cultural' concerns.

Penthouse Records Ska Album Soon Come

READ | NEWS: PENTHOUSE TO RELEASE TO SKA ALBUM THIS MONTH, AUGUST 2012 | YardLink254
SKALICIOUS is the title of a ska album to be released this month by Penthouse Records as reported by the JamaicaObserver.com

The set has 15 songs by artistes including singers Marcia Griffiths, Tessanne Chin, Etana, Ernie Smith, singjay Buju Banton and deejay Exco Levi.
Head of Penthouse, producer Donovan Germain, says he started work on the project five years ago.
“I thought it would be something different, I don’t want to confine myself to reggae,” Germain told the Jamaica Observer.
He said not all the artistes he called up were keen on doing ska, an uptempo, horn-hooked beat that emerged in the early 1960s.
Some were skeptical, they played it safe.
Banton, currently serving a 10-year prison sentence in the United States for drug trafficking, contributed the song Better Must Come while Griffiths did My Promised Land.
Strings of Love (Tessanne Chin) Johnny Too Bad (Etana), Jamdown 50 (Ernie Smith) and Five Decades by Toronto-based Exco Levi are some of the other songs on Skalicious.
Multi-instrumentalist Ernie Wilks, and horn players Dean Fraser (saxophone), trombonists Nambo Robinson and Everton Pessoa and trumpeter Dwight Richards, worked on the album.
Germain, one of the top producers in contemporary reggae, has dabbled with ska in the past, particularly on Banton’s 1997 album, Inna Heights.
